MIGRAIN - Key concepts


Media language: The way that the media communicates with the people consuming it AND terms used to describe specific parts of the media - using CODES & CONVENTIONS.

Industry: The companies and organisations that produce, distribute and regulate the media.

Genre: A way of categorising a particular media text according to its content and style. They follow CONVENTIONS (expectations of a media product).

Representation: The way the people, places and events are re-shown in the media and the messages that this sends to audiences.

Audience: The people who watch/read/listen to the media.
                 Target Audience is based on demographics and psychographics.
                 Demographics (CLEARS) = class, location, education/employment, age, race and sex).
                 Psychographics = the personality, values, attitudes, interests and lifestyles of a target audience.

Ideology: The ideas behind a media text, the secret (or sometimes not-so secret) agenda of its producers.

Narrative: Narrative is the coherence/organisation given to a series of facts. The human mind needs narrative to make sense of things. We connect events and make interpretations based on those connections.
